Chapter 6

When Belle woke up, she lay very still, hoping to still feel her mother's touch. She knew in an instant, however, that she was alone. Renewed feelings of sadness washed over her. She tried to convince herself that it must have been a dream, that her mother was never really there, but she had seemed so real!

As she was laying there, pondering the vision, she suddenly realized that once again she was no longer alone in the room. She bolted up from her bed and saw… Beth.

Belle looked in astonishment at the figure before her. It was Beth, but also not Beth. The figure had her friend's abundant brown curls and olive skin, but was dressed in the strangest manner. She wore a white dress that hung loosely from her body, falling to just below her knees. The odd thing about the garment was that it almost appeared to float apart from her, as if there was a breeze lifting the garment. She was barefoot, and on her head she wore a crown of flowers so lush that they almost looked like they were growing from her scalp. But probably the strangest part of all was that she seemed to glow from an internal source, as if she were some sort of angel.

"Are you Beth?" She asked, almost entirely sure that the being in front of her was not her friend.

"No," Not-Beth replied softly. "I took this form because it would be familiar to you, but I am not her.

"You're the Ghost." There was no longer even a question in her mind.

"Yes. I am the Ghost of Christmas Past."

"Past? Like big-time historic events?"

"No. I am here to show you very specific events. Belle, I'm here to show you your past."

"Specifically my past as it relates to Eben." Again, there was no uncertainty in Belle's tone.

"Yes. Your past with your former love, Ebenezer Scrooge."

"Okay, how do we do this?"

Without appearing to move at all, the Ghost was suddenly standing directly in front of her, and held out a hand. "Come," she said, and Belle felt herself almost involuntarily stepping out of her bed.

They walked over to the window, and Belle looked down from her 6th story view onto the snow-covered streets below. She turned to the Ghost with wide eyes. "You don't expect me to fly or something, do you?"

The Ghost that was not Beth giggled, the sound so much like her friend. "No, just take my hand. I promise no harm will come to you."

Belle still wasn't entirely sure whether or not this was a dream. She grabbed the being's hand, finding it solid. All of a sudden, the air around her changed, and she found herself staring into the past.
